Eugeroic

Tired all the time? Find yourself falling asleep at your desk each day, even after a cup or two of coffee? Looking for an after-lunch pick-me-up to maximize your focus through the afternoon?

There is a class of drugs and supplements that can battle sleepiness, and help you be more productive, with few side effects. Known as eugeroics, these drugs act as stimulants that help increase your concentration and focus for up to 48 hours.

Could eugeroic supplements be right for you? Read on to find out.

What is a Eugeroic?

Eugeroics are a form of nootropic drugs labeled “cognitive enhancers.” Originally intended for people suffering from narcolepsy and attention deficit disorders, eugeroics help to increase alertness and mind focus. These drugs are often marketed to medical personnel and night-shift workers, or to students trying to pull an all-night study session.

The thought process behind eugeroics is not new. Many people rely on caffeine to achieve the same focus and level of concentration. But, eugeroic drugs do not have the same over-stimulating effect as caffeine when taken in the proper dose, which makes them an attractive alternative.

Two drugs that are available in this category are adrafinil and modafinil. These two substances are very similar in chemical makeup, although modafinil is more potent and long-lasting.

Adrafinil vs Modafinil

As mentioned above, both these eugeroic drugs are effective in that they help keep you awake and help your concentration.

For a short time, adrafinil was taken off the market, since modafinil was stronger, worked faster, and lasted longer. But, a side effect that often comes with modafinil’s enhanced strength is the inability to sleep when needed.

Since adrafinil is effective for only 6-8 hours, compared to modafinil’s 12-15 hours, it may be a better choice, since its effects wear off before bedtime.

Although Modafinil is available only by prescription, Adrafinil is available over-the-counter from a supplementor that will ensure their product’s potency and dosage labeling.

Dosage and Side Effects of Adrafinil

First-time adrafinil users should start at 300 mg once a day, which you can divide into two smaller doses if needed. Take the first dose right away in the morning to avoid sleep problems at night. Since food in the stomach will lengthen the time adrafinil starts to work, take it before your breakfast with a glass of water.

Do not take eugeroic supplements every day. They are occasional helpers, not a continuous medication.

If taken correctly, side effects are minimal. Some people have nausea with their very first dose, but it should subside. Other possible side effects include headache, sleeplessness, and anxiety.

Are Eugeroics Right For Me?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not take these drugs, as they interfere with hormonal birth control. People with depression, diabetes, or psychiatric disorders should stay away from eugeroics as well.

Nootropics like Adrafinil may help you if you work nights, or have a demanding job that requires you to be laser-sharp for many hours at a time. When used correctly, they can be a beneficial ally when your mind needs a good boost.
