The Best Sports To Try To Improve Your Fitness In The New Year

Getting in shape for 2021 will be on many New Years’ resolutions lists, especially after the unpredictable year just endured. It might seem like a drivelling task to get active again, but there’s no reason why getting fit can’t be fun!

Before starting, motivate yourself by getting some fresh new workout gear, whether that’s in the new year sales or nabbing a bargain with a Nike discount code. There’s nothing like a fresh pair of running trainers to get you in the mood for a quick jog (or whatever sport you prefer).

Keeping up with the gym or workout routines can get tedious very quickly, and might not be the best option for getting in the habit of exercising. Instead, try a new sport that you could play with a partner, or joining a local team so that you can motivate each other!

Get In The Water

If you have a local leisure centre near you with a swimming pool, then make the most of it! Swimming is a fantastic exercise for the body as it involves every muscle, even improving the performance of your heart and lungs.

While you might struggle to finish three laps on your first few visits, the body quickly builds stamina, and you’ll see a notable improvement in your ability after going regularly. Some leisure centres even have steam rooms, sauna’s, and jacuzzis to relax your muscles after a swim!

Get On The Courts

Picking up a tennis racket might seem daunting, but if you team up with a friend and visit the indoor or outdoor courts, you’ll no doubt get a taste for it!

When running on the treadmill, the stop button might be tempting, but there’s no stop button on a tennis ball! Introducing an element of competition gives the drive to push your body further to really get the blood pumping. Once your skills and confidence improve there are plenty of tennis clubs to join too.

On Your Bike!

Cycling has grown immensely in popularity over the last few years, and statistics say that 42% of Brits already own a Bicycle. If this is you, then there’s no excuse not to make the most of a beautiful day and go out for a ride.

The health benefits of cycling include reduced stress, increased muscle strength, and improved cardiovascular fitness. Instead of taking the car to the shops, consider cycling short distances to save on fuel costs and get well on your way to better fitness.

Enjoy Using Your Body

Improve Your Fitness

As Baz Luhrmann once said, ‘enjoy your body, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own’. Whatever activities or sports you choose to take part in in the New Year, respect your body and know your limits.

By trying out new sports, it’s possible to meet new friends, but try not to compare yourself to them if they are more advanced – skills will develop slowly over time. Either way, give yourself a pat on the back for trying something new!

As the year progresses, those who did not fully commit to their new workout schedule may tail off, and this is where commitment and enjoyment are key. If a new sport has turned out not to be as fun as first thought, don’t be afraid to give it up and try something else. Fitness is a marathon, not a sprint.
